چکیده

Neural reliability and stochastic synchronization are remarkable features of real neurons with important consequences for neural computation. Both phenomena are general properties of any device with a resetting threshold, as neurons are. However, certain characteristics of the single neuron dynamics can notably improve neural reliability and stochastic synchronization. In particular, we show that, under the same conditions, neural resonators are more reliable and more susceptible to synchronize by stochastic inputs than are neural integrators. This suggests that neurons conveying sensory information in a spike-timing code are likely to have evolved into resonators, as supported by our recent experimental studies on reliability and stochastic synchronization in the olfactory bulb. −π −π/2 0 π/2 π 0 0.05 0.1 0.15 0.2 type I phase difference (rad) −π −π/2 0 π/2 π 0 0.05 0.1 0.15 0.2 type II phase difference (rad) 0 π/2 π 3π/2 2π −2 −1 0 1 2 n o rm al iz ed p h as e− sh ift 0 π/2 π 3π/2 2π −1 −0.5 0 0.5 1 0 π/2 π 3π/2 2π −2 −1 0 1 2 phase (rad) n o rm al iz ed p h as e− sh ift 0 π/2 π 3π/2 2π −1 −0.5 0 0.5 1 phase (rad)type Itype II References[1] H. Stochastic dynamics of uncoupled neural oscillators: Fokker-Planck studies with the finite element method.

We have investigated the effect of the phase response curve on the dynamics of oscillators driven by noise in two limit cases that are especially relevant for neuroscience. Using the finite element method to solve the Fokker-Planck equation we have studied (i) the impact of noise on the regularity of the oscillations quantified as the coefficient of variation, (ii) stochastic synchronization of...

Aushra Abouzeid's Dissertation

STOCHASTIC NEURAL OSCILLATORS Aushra Abouzeid, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 We seek to understand collective neural phenomena such as synchronization, correlation transfer and information propagation in the presence of additive broadband noise. Our findings contribute to a growing scientific literature that has shown that uncoupled type II neural oscillators synchronize more readily under...

Type-II phase resetting curve is optimal for stochastic synchrony.

The phase-resetting curve (PRC) describes the response of a neural oscillator to small perturbations in membrane potential. Its usefulness for predicting the dynamics of weakly coupled deterministic networks has been well characterized. However, the inputs to real neurons may often be more accurately described as barrages of synaptic noise. Effective connectivity between cells may thus arise in...

New Route to Phase Synchronization in Chaotic Oscillators

We study a new type of ± 2π irregular phase jumping behavior before the onset of phase synchronization (PS) in a system of two coupled self-sustained hyperchaotic Rössler oscillators. The behavior is understood as a stochastic hopping of an overdamped particle in a potential which has 2π-periodic minima. We characterize it as type-II intermittency with external noise through the return map anal...

Progressive Type II Censored Order Statistics and their Concomitants: Some Stochastic Comparisons Results

In this paper we prove some stochastic comparisons results for progressive type II censored order statistics. The problem of stochastically comparing concomitants of the two progressive type II censored order statistics with possibly different schemes, under different kinds of dependence between X and Y is considered and it is proved that if Y is stochastically increasing (decreasing) in X, ...
